The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is collaborating with AMSSM to incorporate Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) into the sports medicine certification process to ensure fellows are prepared for independent practice.
EPAs are “units of professional practice”1 that “represent core components of a profession.”2 As sports medicine transitions to a competency-based medical education model, fellowship directors will begin attesting that graduating fellows are competent to perform all of the sports medicine EPAs. Competency-based decisions are based on ongoing assessment.2
Plan to attend the September 14 Town Hall where Bradley Changstrom, MD, FAMSSM, the ABFM Director of Sports Medicine, will present the draft EPAs and explain the development process. The session will begin at 8 pm EDT and will be moderated by Rick Okragly, MD, FAMSSM, and Jess Knapp, DO, co-chairs of the new AMSSM Presidential Task Force on Competency-Based Medical Education.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the draft EPAs and the expectations for future implementation. The meeting will be recorded for those who cannot attend in person.
